Local residents are invited to attend the annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner Saturday, Nov. 21, at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
The event will be held from 5: 30 to 7 p.m. and no admission will be charged.
The dinner started in 1990 as a free dinner for the community, Susan Blubaugh, church secretary, said.
“We thought there was a need for a Thanksgiving meal for some members of the community who are in need,” Blubaugh, who co-chairs the church’s Neighborhood Ministry committee with Trisha Cobb, said. “We usually serve between 250-300 people.”
The committee decided to change the dinner menu this year, Blubaugh said.
“Instead of traditional Thanksgiving dinner, we’re going with homemade turkey and noodles,” she said. “We will still include our famous Methodist Cranberry Salad, homemade rolls and all our wonderful desserts.
“Anyone’s invited. It’s free. We always have plenty of food.”
Any donations received at the dinner will benefit the church’s missions program.
Thanksgiving Baskets
First United Methodist Church will also distribute Thanksgiving baskets to needy families Monday evening, Nov. 23.
The baskets are a function of the church’s Community Food Pantry, which is operated yearround.
Blubaugh said the church usually gives out between 50- to-60 Thanksgiving baskets each year.
“The baskets include everything they need for a nice Thanksgiving dinner,” she said.
Families who would like to receive a Thanksgiving dinner basket must sign up ahead of time so the pantry can prepare the baskets.

Community Thanksgiving Service Sunday
Perkins area churches will join together this Sunday November 22nd at 6 PM for the annual Community Thanksgiving service sponsored by the Perkins Ministerial Alliance. The service this year will be hosted by the First Baptist Church family, located at 500 E. Knipe Street, Perkins. The speaker will be Max Rudd, Pastor of the Lost Creek United Methodist Church, Stillwater. Along with congregational singing, music will be shared by the First United Methodist Hand-Bell Choir, a community orchestra, and a community choir.
An offering received each year goes to the emergency fund operated by the Ministerial Alliance. Through the years, this fund has continued to help Perkins area residents with utility payments, food and transportation. Community and area residents are invited to come together and attend this special service of Thanksgiving.
